Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan was started 10 years before the advent of freedom by Dr. K.M.Munshi with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi & active co-operation of stalwarts of Indias freedom movement such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Shri Rajagopalachari and Pt. Jawaharla Nehru. During the last 7 decades it has grown into a network of institutions comprising 120 centres in India and 9 centres overseas, in all have 320 constituent institutions under its umbrella.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is now an esteemed educational organisation, managing some of the country's best schools, colleges and higher education institutions. The Bhavan offers education across a wide range of subjects from Spiritual Studies, Ancient Indian Culture, Classical Music, Dance & Drama, to Commerce, Science, Engineering and Management.

Bhavans Book University, started in 1951, publishes on a variety of subjects fostering education, art and culture. The Book University has published more than 1800 titles with sales in excess of 30 million.

Bhavan conducts cultural and educational activities to promote the message of cultural unity and inter-faith harmony. All activities are initiated with the Sarva Dharma Prayers - a collection of prayers drawn from the Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Zoroastrian, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist scriptures.

In 1984, the Bhavan set up the Dharma Seva Pratisthan to extend financial support for the repair and renovation of ancient and historical places of worship belonging to all faiths.

Bhavan set up the Sarva Dharma Maitri Pratisthan in 1990 as a forum to bring together the humanitarian minded. The forum works to help people appreciate all faiths better and to realize that each faith is one of several steps in mans ascent to Divinity.
